im kasten / at the window, out of the window

a cupboard becomes a camera. it makes one single photograph of a window and a view – an index fossil from the early days of photography.

during the exhibition the door of the wardrobe may be opened and the photograph inspected. at the same time, the camera remains fully functional, projecting an image into the interior (but only while the door remains closed), continuously observing the hotel room, guests, visitors, passers-by …

notes

well-known early views of windows (and out of windows) include vue de la fenêtre du domaine du gras by nicéphore niépce (1827), latticed window at lacock abbey by william fox talbot (1835), and boulevard du temple (louis daguerre, 1838).
